What is the definition of courage? Courage is the willingness and strength to do things that frighten us. To be Brave in the face of adversity and harness the drive to keep moving forward and overcome our fears. The Greek word translated “courage” and “good cheer” literally means “boldness and confidence.” So what does the Bible say about courage? Throughout the Bible, God commands us to fear not, to be of good cheer, and to have courage in our life. Sometimes we doubt our own strength but we can always turn to scripture for the encouragement to live fearlessly anchored by our trust in God. . With God's protection and guidance, we can live a life full of faith and determination, being able to conquer our fears and achieve our dreams. May these Bible verses about courage inspire you to be steadfast in faith and to only fear the Lord. In the New Testament, we see the angel of the Lord telling Mary to have courage to face the trial of being pregnant with Jesus by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, despite having no husband. Again, the reason for her courage is that the almighty God controls all things: “Do not fear…for you have found favor with God” (Luke 1:30). The shepherds are similarly commanded to be of good cheer and have courage by the angel who brought good tidings of great joy (Luke 2:10), and Zachariah was told not to fear, for his prayer had been heard (Luke 1:13). We should be of good cheer, and not should be somber for God is in control, the very reason to praise him! Courage is not just physical bravery. Dragans Diukic states there are six types of courage we may need to face life challenges. On Thankful Thursdays, I will share Dragana Diukic’ “ The Six Types of Courage. 1. Physical courage – Feeling fear yet choosing to act. Involves bravery at the risk of bodily harm or death; and, developing physical strength, resilience and awareness. 2. Emotional courage – Following our heart. Open us to feeling the full spectrum of emotions – pleasant and unpleasant – without attachment. 3. Intellectual courage – Expanding our horizons, letting go of the familiar. It is about our willingness to learn, unlearn and relearn with an open and flexible mind. 4. Social courage – To be ourself in the face of adversity. Involves the risk of social embarrassment or exclusion, unpopularity or rejection. It also involves leadership. 5. Moral courage – Standing up for what is right. Involves doing the right thing even when it is uncomfortable or unpopular. 6. Spiritual courage – Facing pain with dignity or faith. It helps us live with purpose and meaning through a heart centred approach towards all life and oneself. Nearly everyday I deal with a constant cycle of fear, anxiety, depression, and worry. Although I am very thankful to wake up every morning, I know I must put on my armor of God( Helmet of Salvation, Breastplate of Righteous, Shield of Faith, Sword of the Spirit, Belt of Truth and I shod my feet with the Word of God!) We can also turn to Gods word for help by reading stories of courage in the Bible. There are so many key characters in the Bible who had to overcome fear and self-doubt. Sonia McDonald highlights four stories of courage in the Bible which gave me hope and a pathway to overcome my anxiety. There is Moses, David, Esther, and Daniel. The Bible tells us about many men and women who defeated their fear and anxiety by learning to depend on God. I believe their faith in God will inspire you to be courageous, too! Most importantly, fearlessness and bravery come from God! The Bible teaches that we are to take courage from the fact that He never leaves us or forsakes us. ... Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” With God, you can face your fear.
